The former Hillcrest Motel dates to the early 1950s, in 1953 it was owned by Henry Wright. It started out with 15 guest units. In early 1955 Mr. & Mrs. Dean Devoe sold the motel to Mr. & Mrs. Caryl Reams who planned some updates including adding a swimming pool. By 1965 the motel was owned by Kenneth Schnell who added two more guest units, making for a total of 17. The next expansion happened the mid-1980s when then owners Bruce and Maria Lassh added a second building. That new building added 23 guest units and remodeled the existing 17 units bringing the total to 40. The last time we were in Barstow it was the Budget Inn.

A nicely furnished, 15 unit motel with wall-to-wall carpeting and individually controlled air-conditioning. Full tile showers. TV in units. Panelray vented heat. Some completely furnished Kitchenettes. Quality restaurant across the street.

NOTE: This undated postcard is probably from 1964 judging by the 1964 Rambler American Station Wagon in the parking lot and the number of rooms mention (15). Two more rooms were added in 1965.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
