Mugwumps35405 National Trails Hwy., Daggett, CAPhone:

It might have been a Texaco station in the early 1930s since a Texaco station was advertised for sale in 1930 and described as being across from the inspection station. I can't be certain it was this station, but there aren't a lot of possibilities given the advertised location. The station in the ad came with a 10 year lease and offered cold drinks and a sandwich shop in a steel building with Frigidaire, electric compressor, grease rack, etc. That building description almost sounds like it might have been for an earlier building at this location. Mugwumps is a term that refers to political activists in the 1884 U. S. Presidential election and a 1960s folk rock band, which group inspired the name on this former station is a mystery to me..

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
    lanes are still there.
