The 1939 bridge was part of the original 2 lane alignment of Route 66. The westbound bridge, closed in 1988, was part of the expansion of Route 66 to a 4 lane highway. The bridges are listed as five-span structures with steel beams in the IDOT 2012 Route 66 in Illinois Survey. The bridges are located about 2.75 miles south of the 1942 State Police Headquarters GPS: 40.814865,-88.677866

The
eastbound bridge was rebuilt in 1997 and is still in use.

You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane
road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned
lanes are still there.
