This is a former truck stop, Texaco service station and Clover Inn Cafe and Cabins. It's hard to see because of all the overgrown brush surrounding it. The gas pumps and the Texaco sign would have been in the foreground of this photo about straight out from the door on the corner. I'm guessing that sign for the Best Budget Inn has been there for a few years. This was a pretty busy Route 66 spot with two or three gas stations, two motels, and a a couple of cafes.

x A 1952 "For Lease" ad in the Joplin Globe described the property as a "Fully equipped cafe, Texaco filling station and cabins." I suspect that the cabins grew to become the motel behind the cafe.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
