Before 1947 this was a very small cafe on the north side of the train tracks in Thoreau proper. That little cafe was moved from the in town location to this location and then expanded. The front of that original building can be seen towards the left in this photo, it's the single door with a small window on each side.

The bigger section closer to the front of the photo was the first addition. Later a second addition on the other side of the original cafe was built. Why all this moving and adding on, to take advantage of the Mother Road traffic. This is the post 1937 alignment of Route 66 from just west of Santa Rosa to Albuquerque. On the north side of I-40 at exit 53.

The Red Mountain Market and Deli carries the town name and elevation above the store name on the front of the building. "Thoreau, New Mexico, Elev. 7,200".

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
