Braidwood Depot
111 N. Center St. Braidwood, IL
Phone:
The 1882 Chicago and Alton Railroad Depot is home to the Braidwood Area
Historical Society and is located at the intersection of Main Street and
N. Center St., about 3 blocks from Route 66.
The depot was 126 years old when it was moved in 2008 from Berkot's
Supermarket's parking lot on the pre 1940 Route 66 alignment at IL 53
& IL 113 and is owned by the city. Now located on Post 1940 alignment.
There is a small display in the corner of the parking lot that includes
a couple sets of railroad tracks and a very small rail car. According
to the small sign the tracks probably date to the 1870s and may have
led to the Diamond Mine coal mine. I suspect that the narrower set of
tracks and the small car were used in the mining operation.
