The 1882 Chicago and Alton Railroad Depot is home to the Braidwood Area Historical Society and is located at the intersection of Main Street and N. Center St., about 3 blocks from Route 66.

x The depot was 126 years old when it was moved in 2008 from Berkot's Supermarket's parking lot on the pre 1940 Route 66 alignment at IL 53 & IL 113 and is owned by the city. Now located on Post 1940 alignment.

x There is a small display in the corner of the parking lot that includes a couple sets of railroad tracks and a very small rail car. According to the small sign the tracks probably date to the 1870s and may have led to the Diamond Mine coal mine. I suspect that the narrower set of tracks and the small car were used in the mining operation.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
