This 1954 building was originally Miller's Market and was also the U.S. Post Office. Dorothy & Jiggs Miller opened the Market in 1954 and then in 1984 it became Allman's Market. It became as Sheldon's Market in 2001 and continued to serve as the Devil's Elbow Post Office. It was also a Texaco station, at least in the 1960s and 70s with a Texaco sign post about where the flagpole is in this photo and the pumps between the sign and the building. The pump island is still there in this photo.

The Post Office moved around quite a bit in this little community. It had been in the Devil's Elbow Cafe from 1933 to 1941 then moved to the McCoy Camp which was operated by Jiggs father-in-law in 1941 before moving to this building in 1954.

Like almost every other building near the river in Devil's Elbow the store was severely damaged in the big spring flood of 2017. Work was underway to clean the store up and reopen it when we went by later in 2017.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
