East < GO > West

Dale Hooker and his father built this building in 1950 and operated a sporting goods store, grocery and Phillips 66 filling station. The father would open the store in the early morning and Dale would close it up in the late evening, that schedule apparently went on seven days a week, something not to diiferent than in many small businesses today. Among the attractions for the sportsmen were fishing tackle and the outdoor minnow tanks. It became a great gathering place for local and visiting sportsmen.

Dale sold the business in 1969 and rented the building to the new owners who operated it until I-44 bypassed the area in the early 1980s, after which they closed the business. The building was later home to the Roubidoux Woodworkers for a few years.

The doors and windows are all boarded uo now and it looks like all that is left of the building are the walls with no roof.

x About Us We started traveling Historic U.S. Route 66 as a destination in 2009. It's like a 2,400 mile long drive back in time from Chicago to Santa Monica! more
xDid You Know: Many parts of the old 4 lane Route 66 were reverted to a 2 lane road after 66 was realigned to the interstate. In many places the abandoned lanes are still there.
