St. James Hotel Building
103 E. Central, Miami, OK
Phone:
The former St. James Hotel has been renovated as an apartment complex
with businesses on the first floor. It was originally the three story
Hancock Building completed in early 1917 and the five-story Commerce Building
completed in mid-1918. In early 1918 the building were connected into
one complex. The US Post office moved into the first floor of the Hancock
section and the first floor of the Commerce section became the lobby for
the new Club Hotel. The hotel guest rooms were located on the 2nd and
3rd floors of the Hancock section. The upper floors of the Commerce section
were various business offices.
In 1924 the building was sold and all but the first (floor of the Hancock
Building then became the Kenoyer Hotel. In the early 1950s the James
family bought the hotel and changed the name to the St. James Hotel.
This
was the main entrance to the hotel lobby.
The building was placed on the NRHP in 1983, here's a quote from the
nomination form describing the building.
"Throughout its ... history, the St. James Hotel has continuously
served northeastern Oklahoma with a variety of functions. Located
in the original downtown business district of Miami, it has housed
a motor company, a bank, mining company offices, offices for attorneys
and physicians, the U.S. Post Office, and three hotels; all of which
played a significant role in the economic history of the city, and
surrounding area"
